Portugal · Temporary Stay Visa

Temporary purpose. Different visa logic.

A Portuguese Temporary Stay Visa is designed for qualifying stays of less than one year. It is not the same as a Residence Visa or a temporary Residence Permit.
The correct question is whether the move is genuinely temporary — not simply whether the applicant wants a shorter application.

Legal snapshot

Checked 23 August 2026 against the official-source review supplied for this build. This page explains the decision framework, not a complete filing checklist.

Authority processing, consular practice, document legalisation and requests for additional evidence can affect the actual case and timeline.

How to think about it

Resolve the framework before the checklist.

01

Who may use a Temporary Stay Visa?

The current statutory categories include qualifying temporary remote work, independent professional activity, research/teaching/highly qualified activity, study or training, family accompaniment, medical treatment, seasonal work, certain international-service transfers and amateur sport.

  • Temporary remote work can be relevant where the employer or clients remain outside Portugal.
  • Temporary family accompaniment has its own basis, with a seasonal-work exception.
  • Seasonal work has a separate maximum-duration framework.
02

Temporary remote work

Remote employees and independent professionals can have a temporary-stay basis where the work relationship and stay duration fit the statutory framework. The residence D8 and temporary-stay route should not be treated as interchangeable labels.

03

Family accompaniment

A qualifying family member can accompany a Temporary Stay Visa holder under the separate family-accompaniment basis, except where the principal temporary-stay visa is for seasonal work.

Eligibility snapshot

Enough to understand the route. Not a DIY filing manual.

1. Minimum financial floor

Where the general means-of-subsistence framework applies, the 2026 household reference starts at €920/month for the first adult, +€460 per additional adult and +€276 per dependent child. Route-specific income tests can be higher.

2. Income / eligibility baseline

  • A qualifying temporary purpose exists.
  • The intended stay is less than one year.
  • The activity, income or programme evidence matches the relevant category.
  • A residence route has been considered where the move is actually long term.

3. Planning timeline

The statutory maximum decision period is 30 days from completion/instruction of the application. This is not a guaranteed end-to-end timeframe and does not include every appointment, legalisation or evidence dependency.

4. Usually needed

  • Travel document
  • Evidence of the temporary purpose
  • Financial or activity evidence
  • Insurance / general visa evidence
  • Family evidence where accompaniment is involved

5. Keep in mind

  • Temporary Stay Visa is not a Residence Visa.
  • Do not choose the temporary framework simply because the intended filing looks faster.
  • Authority processing, appointments and requests for additional evidence can extend the overall timeline.
