Portugal · Work

Start with how you will actually work in Portugal.

Remote work, Portuguese employment, independent activity and highly qualified roles can lead to different immigration frameworks. The job title alone is rarely enough to choose between them.
If you are already in Portugal and your current residence document no longer reflects how you live or work here, start with the Already here? pathway instead.

Legal snapshot

Checked 23 August 2026.

This page organises the work-route questions identified in the supplied Portugal legal review. It is an orientation layer, not a complete eligibility test. Indexed remuneration thresholds, employer programmes and authority procedures should be checked against the facts and rules in force when the matter is prepared.

Choose by working model

Work first. Route second.

Employer location, contract structure, qualification, remuneration, duration and whether the activity is genuinely remote can all change the route.

01

D8 · residence or temporary stay

Remote work

For employees and independent professionals whose work remains connected to employers or clients outside Portugal. The intended duration matters: a residence route and a Temporary Stay Visa are not interchangeable.

Question we would resolve first

Is the relationship employment, professional services or business-owner work, and is Portugal intended as a residence base or a temporary stay?

02

D1 · employed work

Employment in Portugal

For non-EU nationals taking up qualifying dependent employment with a Portuguese employer. The route should follow the actual employment evidence rather than an assumed contract format.

Question we would resolve first

What is the employing entity, what employment evidence exists and when is the Portuguese work expected to begin?

03

D2 · business / professional activity

Entrepreneur or independent work

For founders, entrepreneurs and independent professionals carrying out genuine economic activity connected to Portugal. There is no universal statutory €50,000 or €100,000 minimum investment for the ordinary D2 route.

Question we would resolve first

What activity will actually be carried out, what evidence already exists and which business or tax questions should be owned by the appropriate specialist?

04

D3 · specialist frameworks

Highly qualified work

Portugal has several frameworks for highly qualified or specialist work. D3, Tech Visa and the EU Blue Card are related questions, not interchangeable labels.

Question we would resolve first

Which framework fits the employer, role, qualification, remuneration and contract structure?

05

Certified-company recruitment

Tech Visa

Tech Visa adds an employer-certification layer to the worker-side immigration analysis. A qualifying Portuguese company must be inside the certified programme before the route is treated as the obvious answer.

Question we would resolve first

Is the employer certified, and does the worker-side profile fit the programme when compared with D3 and the EU Blue Card?

Explore Tech Visa
06

Highly qualified employment

EU Blue Card

The EU Blue Card can be relevant to qualifying highly qualified employment. It should be compared with the other Portuguese specialist-work frameworks before the route is selected.

Question we would resolve first

Do the role, qualification, contract and current remuneration framework point to the Blue Card rather than another highly qualified route?

Review the work route

Already working or living here?

The next question may be your current status, not a new visa.

If you already hold Portuguese residence, the useful work may be a renewal, a status review, a qualifying conversion, a permanent-residence question or citizenship planning. We separate those situations from first-entry routes so existing residents are not pushed back to the beginning of the journey.
